This is me
Born and raised in Philadelphia, Kurt Evans discovered his culinary passion as a child, cooking southern-style dishes alongside his grandmothers. This early experience laid the foundation for a career that saw him refine his skills in some of Philadelphia’s most esteemed kitchens. However, it was his personal experience with the criminal legal system that ignited his commitment to using his culinary talents as a vehicle for social change.
In 2017, Kurt channeled his passion and experience into the creation of the End Mass Incarceration (EMI) Dinner Series, a groundbreaking initiative that uses food and conversation to spotlight the urgent need for criminal justice reform. By orchestrating dinners centered on the themes of mass incarceration, Kurt brings together community members, policymakers, and those directly impacted by the criminal legal system to foster dialogue and inspire action. His unique blend of culinary innovation and activism is driving change far beyond the kitchen.
In recognition of his impactful work, Kurt was named a “Rising Talent” finalist by The Art Of Plating in 2021 and honored as a “Champion of Change” by San Pellegrino’s World’s 50 Best Restaurants. In 2022, he received the Whitney M. Young Powerbroker award and was recognized as a Community Leader by the Philadelphia Association of Community Development Corporations (PACDC). His work has been featured in Food & Wine, Bon Appétit, Good Morning America, and Eater.
Currently, Kurt serves as the Executive Director of Free The Ballot, a multi-racial grassroots alliance of incarcerated people, their family members, friends, and supporters. Led by the Black and Brown communities most impacted by mass incarceration, Free The Ballot is dedicated to mutual support and advocacy for transformative justice.
